Pirosmani Grave Still Not Found

Pirosmani Grave Still Not Found
10 April, 2014
The Society for Pirosmani Heritage Protection has been carrying out the project “Quest for Pirosmani Grave and its Expertise” for one year already. The project aims to find the lost grave of the great Georgian artist Niko Pirosmani and faces a predicament in obtaining permission for the excavations works. The project is based on the possibility that Niko Pirosmani is buried in the Tbilisi Petre-Pavle cemetery. Another possibility was researched by Georgian public figure and poet Irakli Abashidze. The excavations and exhumation of the grave were carried out on the Kukia cemetery in Tbilisi. But this lead did not have any result because it was the grave of a woman. The project “Quest for Pirosmani Grave and its Expertise” needs additional support to be continued.
Ketevan Charkhalashvili, Head of the Society for Pirosmani Heritage Protection: “The project is 100 percent ready and all society members have expressed their readiness to begin the project. We have financial support and we just need permission to dig the ground. I have to say that society has the right to carry out exhumations of graves on the territory of Tbilisi City Hall, which is the owner of the territory. I have to say that we don’t see logic when we have the right to carry out exhumation works; why can’t we just begin the project that only needs the permission to carry out these excavations.”
The territory was scanned with the geo-radar of L. Samkharauli National Forensics Bureau. The results showed “anomalies” in the territory that look like a grave.
The Society for Pirosmani Heritage Protection has gathered a group of independent experts who will observe the project and will have access to all the information during the project such as tests results carried out by anthropologists and archaeologists, and other organizations
The main problem of the issue is that the importance of the project seems not to be very essential. State organizations show indifference towards the subject.
Ketevan Charkhalashvili: “Our society applied to the National Intellectual Property Center Sakpatenti to prove that the idea of the project belongs to members of the Society for Pirosmani Heritage Protection. The methods of searching and testing body remains should be protected and proved, and if other organizations will have the intention to carry out excavations on the territory our society will have the right to protect the project’s intellectual property and we will have the right to apply to court or demand to have the right to observe the project. The fact that we applied to Sakpatenti doesn’t only have a protective meaning. For us, the most important thing is to carry out the project and find the grave of Pirosmani. And we don’t have the intention to demand that only our society can work on this. We want to apply to Tbilisi City Hall and other state organizations to carry out this project under strict supervision of the Society for Pirosmani Heritage Protection and an experts’ group which is staffed with art historians, writers, painters, journalists, archaeologists and other professionals in the field.”

Restoration of “Hunting in India”

Restoration of “Hunting in India”
30 January, 2014
The Pirosmani’s “Hunting in India” is one of his largest and most extraordinary paintings. It depicts two tigers, a bear and a wild boar in a tropical wood. It has not been restored since the 1930s, when it was damaged and in poor condition. Because of its size, restoration is tough. However, now Nana Managadze and Evelina Karseli are restoring the painting. Georgian Journal talked with Managadze, who believes there are other Pirosmani paintings that need restoration.
Q. Please tell us the history of this painting.A. In journals of the National Museum, there is information that famous Georgian writer David Kldiashvili owned this painting and sold it to the museum in the 1930s. It was in a very dreadful situation: it was brought to the museum folded in four parts. You must imagine that this is one of the biggest paintings by Pirosmani.
Q. Is this the Pirosmani’s largest painting?A. No, there are other pictures that are also big and they need restoration.
Q. Were they exhibited or are they unknown by the public?A. They are not known, and they have not been exhibited yet. Maybe there were reproductions in some catalogs.
Q. How much money does the museum need for restoration of these paintings? A. It is hard to tell. Every painting needs an individual approach due to the damages they have and the work that should be carried out.
Q. Is “the Hunting in India” one solid piece of art?A. “The Hunting in India” is a one big, solid canvas. Only a little part of the painting was lost.
Q. What are the conditions you are working in when restoring the painting? A. We – the restoration specialists - have only two rooms for the work. This space is not enough to accommodate “the Hunting in India” – not to mention other paintings that are under restoration. The window is too little, there is not enough light. Besides, there is no proper heating either.
Q. When is the restoration of the painting going to end?A. We began to work on “the Hunting in India” in 2013. National Museum of Georgia bought canvas in Germany just for this painting. Right now we have to restore all the fallen parts of the oil color layer, but this is very refined work, like jewelry. We have to cover all these cracks in the color but not touch Pirosmani’s layers. As you see this is a very refined job. Many of Pirosmani’s paintings need restoration, and there is hope there will be found finances for his masterpieces.

Pirosmani and Georgian Culture
14 November, 2013
The George Chubinashvili National Research Centre for Georgian Art History and Heritage Preservation hosted the International Interdisciplinary Conference “Pirosmani and Georgian Culture.” The event lasted for three days and included speeches by prominent researchers of the art and life of Pirosmani. It was than followed with remarkable tours of the Pirosmani Museum in Kakheti, and Ninotsminda.
The conference coordinated several very interesting events and exhibitions: Pirosmani in Details, a performance about the artist based on details from his paintings - Pirosmani’s Tbilisi; We Paint Pirosmani; and Pirosmani on the Scene and Screen.
The conference was dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of Niko Pirosmanashvili. It was under the aegis of UNESCO, with the support from Minister of Culture and Monument Protection, and other cultural organizations participated. The aim of the conference was to unite research of Pirosmani’s life and art, and to enrich the interdisciplinary understanding of his artistic achievement.
Giorgi Papashili, the organizer of the conference, told Georgian Journal: “Nearly every researcher who has studied this subject presented results of their studies to the society. From a scientific point of view many themes were fully discussed. I can’t say anything about the regularity of the conference, but many studies in this field and other projects will continue.”
Scientists and researchers who offered their work to the society were: Dimitri Tumanishvili, Mariam Didebulidze, Giorgi Papashvili, Irina Abesadze, Gaston Buachidze, Erast Kuznetsov, Ketevan Kintsurashvili, Lela Piralishvili, Giorgi Khoshtaria, Neli Kobiashvili, and Ketevan Charkhalashvili.
Charkhalashvili, President of the Society For Pirosmani Heritage Protection, commented: “It was a very interesting and useful conference that made us, people who work for Pirosmani and feel the energy of this great artist, feel united and share with each other our experience and information. Our society offered to the conference the project ‘Quest for the Pirosmani Grave and its Examination’ that aims to find the Pirosmani’s last haven on Earth. We all know that Pirosmani’s grave is lost. We made all the arrangements, and are ready to begin the project and to research the territory. Soon society may witness one of its greatest events, if we can find the grave of one of the greatest artists of the world, who belongs to Georgia. Right now we are stumbling over some issues related to permission to dig up ground and look for the grave, but we hope that soon this problem will be solved, since nearly all state and cultural institutions and organizations are involved.”
Participants in the conference visited the Pirosmani Museum in his native village in Kakheti, Mirzaani, where there is an exhibition of his work and the house built by the painter for his sister.
